The following excerpt is from an article found on the Philadelphia Flyers' website:
Marco Perazzo (NJMA) works with Cote four days a week doing mixed martial arts and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which Cote is hoping will make him a better fighter. With 664 penalty minutes for the Phantoms the past three seasons combined, Cote knows that his ability to play the enforcer role is his meal ticket to the NHL, especially now that former Flyers-tough guy Todd Fedoruk has signed with the Dallas Stars.
“We do all kinds of hockey-fighting style things. It’s just going to develop balance and strength. I just work on my technique, my grappling, and just tying up and getting my arms free. It’s the closest thing to hockey fighting we can do without skates, but it’s definitely going to help.”
“I think both are going to be very beneficial for me, and helping out in both areas that I need to improve upon.”

Head Instructor Balance Studios
Biography:
Ricardo Migliarese has been training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu for 12yrs. His dedication and hard training has earned him 3x Gracie World Championship medals, 2x Pan American medals and over 20 national and world renowned championship medals.
Ricardo began training jiu-jitsu with his brother Phil at the age of sixteen. Not only is he a competitor, but a great teacher. His love of jiu-jitsu took him to the Gracie Academy in Torrance Ca. to learn the Gracie teaching methods from Master Helio Gracie. He received his black belt and teaching certification from the legendary Relson Gracie, son of Helio.
Currently, Ricardo dedicates his time in training his students whom themselves had become world champions in the art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts. He also takes great pleasure in passing his skills onto people especially Women and children, who want to learn how to defend themselves and at the same time receive a great workout.
Ricardo has been featured in many magazines including Phillyfit, Grapplers Magazine and the Philadelphia inquire. He has also made multiple TV appearances on shows like It’s your call with Lynn Doyle and Fox News. His reputation has earned him invites to teach seminars for Women’s self defense, Law enforcement agents and Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts.
- MMA LEGALIZED IN PENNSYLVANIA
Tuesday, February 27, 2007 - by Mitch Gobetz - MMAWeekly.com
Pennsylvania has become the latest state to remove the ban of mixed martial arts. There was a meeting held yesterday with the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission to remove the ban, and apparently, they will begin to write the regulations.
After an online petition was submitted to the athletic commission, they decided to have a meeting about the enabling of mixed martial arts. The petition contained more than 950 electronic signatures.
Executive director Gregory Sirb confirmed the news to MMAWeekly about the athletic commission approving what they called “MMA-style events”. With Pennsylvania approving MMA, they will likely follow the unified rules in use by most athletic commissions in the United States.
Philadelphia is likely to be the largest target market in Pennsylvania for MMA due to its size, and Pittsburgh is another attractive target market.
With the UFC expanding to new markets, this could open up another venue for them to look at for a future event. The Wachovia Center in Philadelphia would likely be the first place that most promoters would target since it holds more than 12,000 people.

Below is a cool video from the 1972 Olympics. The winner who went on for gold was outweighed by 180lbs. The loser went on to become a Bronze medalist at those same olympics. This is a great example of how technique and leverage can work against a much larger opponent.

NJMA Competition Team Results
This past weekend, some of NJMA's instructors and students competed in the ADCC North American Trials. For those of you not familiar with the ADCC, it is the world championships for submisison wrestling. This year's event was special because of the introduction of an amateur event as well as the professional qualifier.
A special congrats goes out to Rick Macaulley an NJMA instructor who competed in the professional event this past weekend. Read below to see how he and the rest of Team NJMA fared.
ADCC Trial's Most Technical Fighter Award:
Over 76 kgs: Rick Macauley
Despite taking 2nd place in the professional event, the tournament officials were so impressed with Rick's grappling ability that he was awarded with the "Most Technical Fighter" award.
Men's Cruiserweight (77-87 kg):
2nd Place: Rick Macauley
On his way to placing second, Rick had the fastest submission of the day - a lighting fast 15 sec heel hook. He also defeated a member of the famed Gracie family, then later defeated Rafael Lovato, Jr., who some considered the number one seed in the tourney. Rick fought hard in the finals but could not keep his streak going, losing to Chris Moriarty.
Intermediate Mens No-gi Heavy Weight
1st Place: Kevin Lutz
Taking first in this division was a big accomplishment for Kevin. He showcased his wrestling skills in one match with some very nice take downs and positional control while proving his versatility in another, submitting his other opponent.
Others Competing:
Kirby Farrales
This was Kirby's first competition without the gi but he did not let this slow him down or phase him. He was a submission attack machine, going for triangles and guillotines. His opponent was able to play the points a bit better however, and Kirby lost a tough match on points.
Jason "Skeletor" Patton
Never one to miss a tourney, Jason again stepped up and competed. His ultimate goal is fighting MMA but Jason knows that competing and getting his Jiu-jitsu better will only help him to achieve his ultimate goal of fighting in the ring or cage. Jason had two very exciting matches, showing huge heart, determination, and also some impressive escapes. This was not to be Jasons day, losing both matches on points. Like a true warrior, Jason was back in the school the next day for class working on his game.

Rick going for the footlock on Joe Dix, ending with an impressive 15 second win
